Insurance experts at the Government Actuary’s Department (GAD) are teaming up with the government to help schools in England go green and reduce their carbon footprints.

They’re doing this through something called the Risk Protection Arrangement (RPA), which is like insurance for schools. If something bad happens, like a fire or a flood, the government steps in to cover the losses. GAD helps figure out how much money is needed for this.

But here’s the cool part: Instead of just replacing things that get damaged, as they do with regular insurance, the RPA is all about making things better, especially for the environment. They’re looking at ways to rebuild schools in a greener, more eco-friendly way.

For example, at Morecambe Bay Academy, they had a flood that wrecked their boiler room. Instead of putting in a new gas boiler, they used the money from the RPA to install a ground source heat pump. This not only fixed the problem but also helped the school cut down on its carbon emissions.

GAD is also helping the government plan ahead for more green projects in schools. They’ve looked at lots of data to figure out which schools need new boilers soon and where they could install heat pumps. They’re crunching numbers to see how much carbon could be saved and how much money it could cost.

The goal is to make schools in England more eco-friendly and energy-efficient. By working together, GAD and the government are taking big steps toward a greener future for schools and the planet.
