The UK government is now looking to cut carbon pollution by 78% by 2035, which will help them reach their net-zero goal faster. The 1990-level goal was suggested by the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), and it will be passed in June 2021.

Business & Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said:

“The UK is leading the world in tackling climate change and today’s announcement means our low carbon future is now in sight. The targets we’ve set ourselves in the sixth Carbon Budget will see us go further and faster than any other major economy to achieve a completely carbon neutral future.”

Because of this news, home heating, which is responsible for 15% of carbon pollution in the UK, will change. To meet carbon reduction goals, more money needs to be put into low-carbon heating systems like heat pumps and hydrogen heaters.

“This latest target shows the world that the UK is serious about protecting the health of our planet, while also seizing the new economic opportunities it will bring and capitalising on green technologies – yet another step as we build back greener from the pandemic and we lead the world towards a cleaner, more prosperous future for this generation and those to come.”

Are They Going to Ban the Boilers?

Boiler warmth works well. We can’t always use gas and oil to heat our homes. Heat pumps that take in heat from the air or the ground are a low-carbon option. Heat pumps use power to heat homes and don’t give off any carbon.

The only problem is that heat pumps are hard to set up and don’t work well in many homes. People who own homes and heating experts will be wary of future low-carbon heating system schemes after the Green Homes Grant failed.

It might be cheaper to change the fuel than to fix millions of heaters across the country. Here comes the hydrogen.

Gas heaters, which make carbon, are used to heat and heat water in about 85% of homes in the UK. Hydrogen is being thought of as an alternative because when it burns, it only makes heat, water, and gas.

Modern condensing gas boilers can work with a mixture of gas and hydrogen, but if the gas network moved to hydrogen, hydrogen-ready boilers would be needed. These are being made by big companies like Worcester Bosch and Baxi, and by 2025, all stoves must be ready to use hydrogen.

To cut carbon pollution by 78%, there needs to be a clear path for home heating.

Lord Deben, head of the CCC, said,

“This path makes it clear: the government needs to focus very hard over the next 10 years.”

“The UK won’t reach net zero by 2050 if policies aren’t tightened in every area, companies aren’t encouraged to invest, and people don’t take part in this effort.” The 2020s need to be a key decade for growth and activity.

Reduce Your Carbon Emissions with Gas Boiler Replacement Grant

If you already have a gas boiler but it is inefficient and non-condensing and has high carbon emissions, you may qualify for a free gas boiler replacement grant. It is the UK government-backed initiative aimed to help low-income households reduce their carbon emissions and energy bills while increasing their home efficiency free of cost.
