Starting today, families can cut bills with energy saving tips through a collaboration between the government and Amazon Alexa. By asking Alexa, you’ll receive advice on how to reduce your energy saving bill, prepare your home for winter, and use less energy-saving year-round. This could save you at least £100 annually. You can access this experience via Amazon Echo devices or the free Alexa app on mobiles.

To prompt Alexa, simply say phrases like “Alexa, give me energy-saving tips” or “Alexa, help me conserve energy.” This initiative is part of the government’s It All Adds Up campaign, which aims to help people save money. Alongside Alexa, you can find helpful advice online through the Help for Households website.

Additionally, over three million households now qualify for the Warm Home Discount. This is a one-off £150 payment to assist eligible low-income customers in England, Scotland, and Wales with their winter energy saving tips to reduce bills. It’s great news for those who need a little extra support during the colder months!

Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Claire Coutinho said:

“Energy prices are down 55 per cent since their peak, but we know many families are still facing pressures. That is why we are continuing to provide financial support, including targeted help, such as the £150 Warm Home Discount, for those most in need.”

“There are also some small, simple things families can do to keep their bills down – from reducing the boiler flow temperature to turning off radiators in rooms not being used, it all adds up.”

“Our collaboration with Amazon’s Alexa will help to make these tips easier to access as we relaunch our campaign to cut bills with energy saving tips, which helped families across the UK save around £120 million last winter.”

Minister for Energy Consumers and Affordability Amanda Solloway said:

“We want everyone to be able to take easy steps this winter to save money on their energy bills. By following energy saving tips such as reducing boiler flow temperature, or washing clothes at a lower temperature, families could save at least £100 a year.”

“And our Warm Home Discount will mean that over three million households receive more targeted support to help with the cost of energy.”

John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager at Amazon, said:

“With new energy saving tips on Alexa, you can simply ask for helpful advice on how to make simple changes around the home to help reduce energy costs this winter.”

Below are the six easy energy saving tips that can save up to £100 on energy bills:

Lower Boiler Temperature: Set your boiler flow temperature to 60 degrees to get a potential savings up to £60 per year.

Regular Boiler Servicing: Get your boiler serviced to prevent costly repairs to avoid unexpected expenses.

Bleed Radiators: Remove air pockets from radiators to improve efficiency.

Turn Down Unused Radiators: Lower the heat in rooms you’re not using to have a potential savings of up to £50 per year.

Wash Clothes at 30 Degrees: Use cooler water for laundry and get a potential savings of up to £20 per year.

Energy-Efficient Showerhead: Install a shower head that saves water and energy for receiving a potential savings of up to £40 per year.

Remember, these small changes can add up to big savings on your energy bill!

The Warm Home Discount will be automatically applied to energy bills between October 2023 and March 2024. People with prepayment metres will get it as a top-up voucher instead.

The Department for Work and Pensions is promoting its Household Support Fund Awareness Week. They want vulnerable people in England to contact their local councils to learn about the support available to them. Since October 2021, 26 million awards have been given from the Household Support Fund.

This year, the government is also offering other financial help to families. This includes a £900 payment for people on means-tested benefits, £300 for pensioners, and an extra £150 for disabled people. Energy prices have gone down again this month, dropping by 55% from their highest point.

People in England and Wales who qualify for the Warm Home Discount will get a letter starting in October. The letter will explain the discount and what to do next and a complete guide on energy saving tips. In Scotland, customers need to apply directly with their energy supplier as soon as possible.

Mike Thornton, Chief Executive at Energy Saving Trust said:

“As we head into the colder winter months with energy prices remaining high, it’s vital that people know how to reduce the amount of energy they use around their home to keep bills as low as possible.”

“Public information, engagement and advice have a vital role to play, therefore we welcome the relaunch of this UK government campaign.”

“We hope its continued success paves the way for further initiatives that inspire positive behaviour change around energy consumption in the future.”
